Challenging Math for the Curious!

Challenging Math for the Curious!

Why is Math important? What are Numbers? What, how and where are mathematical concepts useful? This exploration will attempt to open the camper’s mind to possibilities in the world of Mathematics.
We will awaken a sense of wonder and curiosity, as we explore inductive mathematical reasoning. We will start by ‘counting’ in different languages and reflect upon the similarities and contrasts associated with a conceptual structure for counting natural numbers (as expressed in diverse languages including traditional native Canadian languages).
Different types of numbers will be explored and with the use of inductive reasoning, methods will be developed to predict numbers in various numerical sequences.
Discussion will also identify number systems which are used by both humans and computers. Campers will understand and appreciate platonic solids and be encouraged to construct and interpret Pascal’s triangle. Flexagons, geometric and geodesic constructions can also be explored by engaging in “hands on activities”.
Based on the aptitudes, strengths and levels of curiosity of each of our campers, Matrices and Curve Sketching may also be explored. Interesting examples of what, where, when and how mathematical concepts are used – what we can learn from mathematical reasoning will remain quintessential.
